W. Bro Charles Claude Mee PPJGD

7th March 1906   -   7th July 2004

It is with great sadness that we record the death of W. Bro. Charles Claude Mee, Past Provincial Junior Grand Deacon of this Province. He was affectionately known to the brethren of this Lodge as ‘Charlie Mee’.

He was initiated into the Lodge on the 8th. November, 1947, but although a faithful attender throughout his years as a member, he never occupied any progressive office in the Lodge, probably due to pressure of work, because he was very much a self-made man and a very successful businessman.

After his retirement from business he was a very successful Lodge Almoner, having all the attributes of sympathy and kindness, but at the same time protected the interests of the Craft as and when the occasion arose.

It wasn’t until he was in his ninetieth year that he was persuaded to become Master. He received great support and understanding from the brethren and as a result his year was both a memorable one for himself and for the Lodge, culminating in a Ladies’ Weekend in Bournemouth, where over a hundred attended, when he was accompanied by his daughter Patricia as his lady, together with his son-in-law and grandchildren.

Charles was a kind, unassuming Mason who reflected and practised all that was best in Freemasonry. His kindness extended in many practical ways, much to the benefit of the Lodge in his gifts of three antique silver goblets for the use of the Master and Wardens at the Festive Board; the financing of the creation of the Lodge Banner and a Book of Remembrance which records the names of all the deceased brethren from the founding of the Lodge to the present day and which is opened at the appropriate page and closed as part of the Lodge proceedings at every meeting .

Charles died on the 7th. July, 2004  at the grand age of 98  and it can be truly said ‘that he lived respected and died regretted’.
